Staying on track with making healthy, positive choices while at a party or event is one of the most challenging aspects of being healthy. And if your lifestyle is such that you are out and about a lot, then it becomes almost impossible not to be faced with weight gain that results in not just a sagging booty, but also a sagging self esteem. Below are my 5 top strategies to stay on track with healthy choices while at parties, dinners and gatherings. Before we dive in, be sure to download my FREE guide with all of the healthy craving swap ideas! 1. Decide before you go. Be super clear about the choices you will and will not make at the party. If you know BEFORE you go, and you set this intention, then your behavior is more likely to follow. For example, if there will be a dessert buffet, decide ahead of time what you are going to enjoy. Giving yourself the space to enjoy rather than restrict will leave room to NOT overdue but to honor what you decided. 2. Eat before you go. The best way to avoid over drinking and grazing on appetizers that have been fried and are loaded with calories and fat is to have a light meal before you go. If you arrive at your event with a full belly, you’re much more likely to say no thank you and avoid overdoing it. This is always the best strategy to avoid holiday weight gain. 3. Take something healthy. Depending on the event, bring a healthy dish that is fitting so that it meets your parameters and can be shared with the group. This will help you stay and other on track, and you may notice that you were the hit of the party. 🙂 4. Don’t skip meals! Whatever you do don’t try to make up for calories by skipping meals before an event as it will only result in overdoing it later. This is also one way that people trick themselves into weight gain. The body shifts into starvation mode and then holds on to any calories it can get. Stay consistent with your meals and simply allow yourself the opportunity to not overindulge. 5. Avoid the “oh well” mentality. Many people make the mistake of allowing themselves to go off the deep end once they made a choice that is not in alignment with their goals. Just because you decide to have a piece of dessert, don’t throw it all in and try one of everything because you “blew it.” Enjoy what you decide to eat, and allow yourself the freedom and the satisfaction to have a treat without beating yourself up. Now you are the healthy holiday party ninja and there are no excuses. It is super easy to avoid soiree weight gain when you simply get clear, plan ahead and lead yourself down a path conducive to success.
