The Next Fad: CLEANSING WITH FOOD
I was recently interviewed for an upcoming article about the future trend of cleansing WITH food. Realizing the common misconception that cleansing means STARVATION, I wanted to share this information with the hope that it will assist you in your quest for VIBRANT HEALTH & HAPPINESS.
1. Why eat instead of juice to cleanse?
The word “Cleanse” is extremely misused and misunderstood. Consumer marketing has taken what is a very important, sacred practice for physical, mental, and spiritual health, and manipulated it to drive behavior.
A “juice cleanse” is not a real cleanse. It is an opportunity to give the body a rest from digestion, and a good way to break a cycle of destructive behavior and nutrition choices, but it is not a REAL cleanse.
Also, MOST juice cleanses involve juices that are extremely high in natural sugar which can throw the body out of further whack by spiking blood sugar levels. It is also why many people “crash” during different periods of the day. To truly cleanse the body requires a very strategic approach that includes high quality herbal supplements to support the body in removing toxicity and coming into balance, specific food to ensure proper nutrition, and strategic timing of all of the above so that the process is most effective.
Eating is an important part of a cleanse because, IF following the proper regimen and eating the right foods, it will assist the body in getting the proper nutrients it needs to reset and speed up the metabolism, it will increase the ph level in the blood, it will assist in rebuilding the inner lining of the intestinal walls, and it replenish healthy flora in the gut.
The body needs nutrients to function. The metabolism needs nutrients in order for reactions to take place, and the metabolism is responsible for the detoxification pathways in the body (this is what cleans the body).
Also, to truly clean the body takes time. While the body is always working to clean itself, the ritual of cleansing for healing purposes involves a longer period of time to allow the body to go thru the process. This cannot be accomplished in 3 or 5 days. It takes time and patience, and there is no quick-fix, band-aid solution.
During this time the body needs nutrients to not only assist in the healing, but to aid in the rebirthing process that occurs. Juicing does not ensure that a full spectrum of nutrients will be consumed, and, as I stated above, MOST juice cleanses actually harm the body with excess sugar. In my opinion, most retail juice cleanses out there continue to feed into and play on one of the biggest problems we have in our society today, and that is our addiction to sugar.
This brings me to my next point, and that is that one of the main reasons we need to cleanse regularly (I believe 3/x per year), is because of the diet most people consume has left them in a very poor state of health. Most people are confused about what is healthy, are misled with piecemeal information, and are caught in the chemical and psychological addictions that have been created by the food choices they have made.
When a person cleanses with a PROPER food regimen, it will assist them in gaining valuable nutritional education, breaking food addictions and cravings, and it will help them form new, concrete, healthy habits. Also, actually eating at meals will help retrain the palate to create healthy food. The palate is completely malleable and can be trained to enjoy whatever we feed it.
Finally, not eating and juicing still plays into the psychological battle most people face with food, as most are trapped in the “good/Bad” mindset – seeing food as good or bad, or seeing themselves as good or bad based on their choices. Only drinking a juice plays into the starvation and deprivation mentality that serves no one. Allowing oneself to eat at every meal helps them create freedom with food, and to experience what it is like and what it really means to eat to fuel the body.
The beauty of Nykki’s Cleanse is that not only does it have physical benefits and mental benefits like increased energy, weight loss, mental clarity, peaceful sleep, clear skin, and more, it also has emotional and psychological benefits. Cleansers create a healthy relationship with food, heal psychological addictions and personal shame. They gain a positive body image, understand and experience self -love and self-respect, and come to live with freedom with food. And this, my friends, is the power of a REAL cleanse that allows you to actually nourish your body as opposed to deprive it!
