The vast majority of us aim to make healthy food choices, but with the abundance of crap that is thrown our way (sugar is everywhere), and the ease and accessibility of processed foods, this can sometimes make being healthy seem impossible.  Thank goodness for the rising “healthy food on the go” trend, but until this becomes mass market, one strategy is to model eating after some of the healthiest countries on the planet.

Israel.

Mazel Tov on harboring healthy eating and exercise habits.  One of the healthiest countries in the world eats a staple salad of cucumber, tomato, bell pepper, and onion. This is always a hit at any party (made with organic ingredients of course), and these veggies are high in water content, vitamin c and antioxidants.

Hummus is also a great addition and acts as a creamy dressing alternative full of protein and healthy fats.

Sweden.

We know that berries are filled with antioxidants and vitamins, but have you ever heard of a lingonberry? Marked as a superfood by various publications, these berries are native to Sweden and enjoyed as a traditional breakfast stable. The berry has been studied for everything from blood pressure to UTIs, so give it a try by implementing into your diet!

While these may not be the easiest to find, you can easily find them online!  And if you can’t find them, pick up mulberries instead.  These magical little fruits are also a hidden gem.

Japan.

Skip the morning cup o’ joe and follow the lead of the country that boasts the highest number of centarians (people who celebrate 100 birthdays or more!)  Green Tea has been studied for faster metabolism, higher brain function, and even reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes!

YES – it does still have caffeine, which is something to consider, but it is a great substitute for the typical American choice.  Best option is to grab the organic powdered version, whisk and enjoy.  Bottoms up!

Italy.

Bread, Wine, Meats, Cheese, Longer Life?  Maybe it is the STRESS FREE approach to life, and the laissez faire mentality of work to live as opposed to live to work?

One important factor for Italian health is the portions in their meals are much smaller and always incorporate fresh ingredients…  Much different than the standard American more food faster protocol.  And a staple in Italian cooking is wonder-working olive oil.

Long and short of it – being healthy is a choice and when you make these choices over and over they become habits.  Habits then eventually turn into a lifestyle.   Once healthy becomes a lifestyle, it becomes so ingrained it is a way of being and you don’t even know you are doing it.  🙂
