Stress: The Biggest Killer of All

I am convinced that despite how well we take care of our body, there is one influence that has the ability to take us down and destroy our health in a matter of moments.  In fact, it actually took my mom’s life in the biink of an eye without any notice.   I am talking about Stress…  that dreaded feeling that creeps in when the temperature rises, the pressure is on, and suddenly things feel out of control.  

The scary thing about stress is, despite it’s serious negative impacts on the body, it has become a normal state of existence for most of us. We live in an overactive, high pressure world filled with demands and expectation, and in reaction to survival, we have come to operate from a highly stress center.  If this stress is not released, consequences are severe.  For my mom, it was a brain aneurism.  This may seem extreme, but this really happens.  

Stress of any degree activates “fight or flight” mode, increasing cortisol levels, raising blood pressure, and causing constriction of blood vessels.  It has been associated with strokes and even heart attacks.  But it doesnt stop there.  Stress affects the endocrine system, the respiratory system, the digestive system, the reproductive system…..  the list goes on.  This is serious!

Stress has been linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, anger problems, migraines, inability to focus and concentrate, nightmares, jaw clenching…  And the scariest thing is that most of us are not conscious enough to make the connection.  

The question begs to be asked — how are you taking care of yourself?  Are you taking a daily preventative approach to peel off the layers that have accumulated throughout the day?  Yes, daily, because this is what we need to do in order to protect our health and our sanity!!
