Are you only looking to food to nourish yourself?
They are many sources of nourishment, and very often you might find yourself reaching for something to eat when what you are really craving is love, comfort, connection and self care. Food will never satisfy that, it will only provide a bandaid.
In order to be the happiest, healthiest version of yourself, you’ve got to learn how to nourish yourself in more ways than simply what you put in your mouth.
Here are a few easy suggestions:
- Hugs & human contact
Hugs can be pretty awesome, especially when it’s a much-needed, warm embrace from someone you know and trust. It has the ability to uplift your spirit, lighten your mood, shift your energy, and nourish your soul.
I remember one time I was feeling down and went to visit a friend who has three little munchkins. I walked in the door and they all ran up to me and gave me huge hugs. I sat down with them and one sat on my lap while the four of us chatted and talked about what they were up to. Within minutes my entire mood had been lifted and my energy completely changed. I felt happy, rejuvenated, light, carefree, and positive.
It really can be that easy.
2. Self Touch
It may sound kinky, but if you take the kink out of it you can really nourish yourself by simply placing your own hands upon your body. Feeling stressed and tense in your neck and shoulders? Turn away from the computer, take in a deep breath, and put your hands at the base of your neck where it meets your shoulders. Breath into your hands and visualize the warmth melting away the tension.
Or try laying on your back and place one hand over your belly and one hand over your heart. Breathe into these areas and notice how nurturing it is to feel the warmth on your skin.
3. Tap into Nature
What if you could create that same experience without a physical interaction? Nature provides us with all kinds of nurturance when you simply bring your awareness to it. Let it be easy—listen to the sound of the bird outside the window. Feel the breeze of the afternoon wind on your skin. Let the crisp air in the morning enliven your Spirit. Simply notice the beauty of the leaves on the trees or the uniqueness of the branches.
These small little subtleties will have a big impact on reminding you that you are an extension of nature and you are being nourished by something greater than yourself.
4. Music
We are vibrational beings, and music is all about vibration and frequency. Allow it to nourish you. Set the intention that when you open your playlist, one song will jump out at you. This song—perfectly motivating and cheerful—will fill each cell in your body with a new, exciting energy. Put your earbuds in, turn it up a bit, close your eyes and enjoy a lyrical hug.
If you have the space, get up and move your body. Dance, Dance, Dance. This will nourish you in ways you cannot even explain.
Life often throws curve balls that can throw you off balance if you don’t take control of your inner being.
You can do this by finding comfort and support in each moment and relying on simple strategies to keep your Spirits high in all situations.
It’s all about setting your intention, and then allowing the solution and the nourishment to arrive….
It could be the pebble in your shoe, the smile from a stranger, the song when you turn on the radio, the butterfly that comes out of left field.
Have fun—nourish yourself throughout the day through fun exchanges with your surroundings rather than candy at the water cooler. Trust that whatever is near you is exactly what you need to guide you towards your desired state of being. Even that weird looking beetle that landed on your car at the stop light. Go with it.
